Teresa Onoda is a well-known California landscape painter whose work can be found in the homes of collectors from coast to coast. She has been featured at galleries in places such as Carmel, San Francisco's Union Square, and Vail, Colorado. She has taught classes, judged competitions and participated in many shows over the past three decades. Most of her plein-air work showcases the beauty of farms, forests, rolling hills and vineyard of The Golden State. Because of urbanization, many of these sites are being lost to urbanization, so Teresa feels an obligation to capture their beauty for future generations.
Teresa earned a degree in Fine Arts from Creighton University then taught art in Omaha, and Houston. After moving to Moraga Teresa, studied plein-air painting with well-known artist Pam Glover. In just a few years, Teresa's work began to gain attention for its powerful painting technique and use of beautiful color. Many began to appreciate the sense of movement and life she imbued in the landscapes captured on canvas.
Teresa has her roots in a group that painted in the Bay area in the early 1900's called "The Society of Six." Several members of the Society of Six passed on their craft to young local painters, including Pam Glover, who painted with one of the group's founders, Louis Siegrist. She also painted with Siegrist's son, Lundy, who followed in his father's artistic footsteps. Mrs. Glover, in turn, has taught plein-air techniques to many accomplished artists, including Teresa Onoda, who teaches outdoor painting herself. Given the strong hold of the arts in California and the striking natural coastline and mountains this generation-spanning school of painting is certain to continue.
Expressing her love for California in a new way Teresa ran for public office on a platform of land preservations. Serving as both Mayor and Vice Mayor of Moraga, her goal was to make sure future generations would be able to know the California that we all love. In 2018 the town passed an ordinance making open space much more protected than ever before. Teresa became Mayor again in 2024 and worked hard to prepare the town for a sustainable future for our residents and the animals alike. Now she is enjoying life, painting and riding her horse. Life is good in Northern California.
Artist's Statement
Painting California is an honor. Mother nature has been so good to this land, we have mountains, the ocean, vineyards, animals, farms, and kind people. I am so very lucky to be part of this. My art is a love letter to Califonia.
